The West Virginia
School of Traditional Skills
We believe that the strongest communities are built by people who share their knowledge, support one another, and care for the land that sustains them. We believe education should be hands-on, hospitality should be genuine, and every person has something valuable to teach and something new to learn.
We believe in preserving Appalachian traditions while embracing innovation, in stewarding our natural resources through regenerative practices, and in creating opportunities for local farmers, artisans, entrepreneurs, and families to thrive together.
Above all, we believe that when people gather around a table, work alongside one another, and experience authentic connections with the land and each other, lives are changed, communities grow stronger, and the legacy we leave becomes greater than anything we could accomplish alone.
Appalachian Heritage Workshops
The West Virginia School of Traditional Skills is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Appalachian heritage by teaching the practical skills that have sustained generations. Through hands-on education, immersive workshops, apprenticeships, and community events, we empower people of all ages to reconnect with the land, develop self-reliance, and gain confidence through meaningful experiences.
Our classrooms extend far beyond four walls. From the forests and fields of Laurel Fork Farm to the kitchen, workshop, and trails, every lesson is rooted in real-life application. Students can explore topics such as regenerative agriculture, forest farming, herbalism, food preservation, gardening, animal husbandry, traditional crafts, wildlife conservation, outdoor skills, and much more.
At the heart of our mission is the belief that knowledge is meant to be shared. We partner with experienced artisans, farmers, educators, and professionals from across West Virginia to teach the skills they know best, creating opportunities for them to share their expertise while inspiring others to learn. By connecting students with local experts, we help preserve traditional knowledge, strengthen rural economies, and foster a community built on collaboration rather than competition.
Whether you're interested in learning a new skill, deepening your connection to nature, or passing timeless traditions on to future generations, the West Virginia School of Traditional Skills offers an educational experience where history, innovation, and community come together to keep Appalachia's heritage alive.
